Year 6

Music

Music in the Junior School has an emphasis on practical music-making, across a wide variety of musical styles and genres.  Using our digital equipment, Samba band set, African djembe drums, range of electronic and acoustic instrument and our upgraded Music mac suite, all students develop an understanding of a range of music from different times and places through a holistic combined approach utilising and building theory, performing, composing, improvising, listening and appraising skills.  All students in the Junior School also study music theory and are entered for ABRSM theory exams throughout the academic year.

The Symphonfree Scholar Scheme in Year 7 also offers all students the opportunity to learn a string, woodwind or brass instrument completely free of charge, including the loan of an instrument and a dedicated ensemble to develop performance skills.

We welcome, encourage and support students across the Junior School to take part in our many performance opportunities throughout the academic year including the Christmas and Summer Concerts, the nurturing Key 2 and 3 Chamber Concert, Year 6 Production, Year 7 Showcase, year group and whole school assemblies, as well as the bi-annual whole school production.

Please see the range of extra-curricular ensembles that we run at lunchtimes and after school, as well as the chance to receive instrumental and / or vocal tuition with our specialist team of Visiting Music Teachers offering piano, percussion, singing, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola, cello, guitar & bass guitar lessons.  Visit www.portlandplacemusic.com for more information and news.
