Science

New GCSEs were introduced two years ago with a new grading system 1-9.

The first cohort of students failed to achieve any grade 9s, there was a handful of grade 8s.

With the experience under our belts, the science department prepared the second cohort for the summer of 2019. In biology 47% of 15 students achieved grades 9-7, 4 grade 9s. In chemistry 47% achieved 9-7, 3 grade 9s. In physics 60% achieved 9-7, 3 grade 9s.

From September 2020 the new school curriculum will enable all pupils to choose separate science GCSEs. It is felt that, if pupils are doing sciences because they want to and the teachers have gained the experience of what is required, then further improvements in grades should be expected.
