Psychology pupils attended the 'Science and Pseudoscience conference' (3 images)

Psychology Trip Our Sixth Form Psychology students attended the Science and Pseudoscience conference this week, where they had the opportunity to hear from various accomplished speakers. Phil Banyard dismissed many of the Government supported 'myths' that we believe in these days; such as eating our 'Five-a-day', drinking eight glasses of water in a day and Brain Gym, saying that none of them are supported by any scientific research,. The writers of the AQA Psychology book that we use, Cara Flanagan and Mike Cardwell, spoke about Lab experiments and whether Psychology can save the world. The highly accomplished and entertaining Richard Wiseman is a professional Magician and Psychologist who showed the students the psychology of magic tricks, illusions and luck. Lastly, the most enjoyable aspect of the conference was the Hypnosis session which left the students bewildered and in fits of laughter, all at the same time. The session was led by the world renowned hypnotist, Andrew Newton, who has made over 5,500 public and television appearances. A lucky few were hypnotised on stage as the rest of the audience watched them in amazement. In their state of hypnosis, the volunteers happily believed that they were on a beach relaxing, started to lick an imaginary ice cream and then flinched when the hypnotist told them that a boy was kicking dirt on them! All in all, it was a highly entertaining ending to an enlightening day out.

Year 11 Trip to Westminster Abbey and Houses of Parliament (7 images)

Year 11 Trip to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament Year 11 visited two historic London landmarks as part of their GCSE course. Two students give their views of the trip. Westminster Abbey, one of Britain's greatest and well-known Protestant churches. Even though it appears small on the inside, it is a place of truly majestic architecture that took hundreds of years to complete. Our tour guide showed us the history of Westminster Abbey through the famous people who are buried there. That includes Elizabeth I, Sir Winston Churchill, Handel and William Shakespeare. It was an interesting experience that taught me that this is one of Britain's greatest treasures. John Sperling I enjoyed the trip to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament because I have never been to either before. I preferred the Houses of Parliament because we got to see how new laws were passed, met the MP of Westminster and got to go through a secret passage. The architecture in both buildings was phenomenal. In Westminster Abbey we got to go to the tomb of Edward the 1st which is normally closed off to the general public. This was an unexpected surprise. Year 9 Flour Babies Egg Baby Project (18 images)

Year 9 Flour Babies Egg Baby Project On October 14th 2011, Miss Wilson’s English class took up the challenge to take care of a hard-boiled egg all day as if it were their own child. They had to keep it safe and take it with them to all their lessons. If they could not take them to a particular lesson, a suitable baby-sitter had to be found! This project is based on the play Flour Babies that we have been studying, in which a science class of boys have to take care of bags of flour for two weeks in order to learn the responsibilities of bringing up a child. At the end of our day-long project, only four eggs out of ten returned in one piece! Well done to Jordan Akester, Nathan Perlman, Alex Stedman and Edward Trebilcock who proved the best Egg Parents!
