ECDL @ Portland Place School

ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is a relevant and internationally recognised qualification for computer users. ECDL improves students’ understanding and efficient use of computers. The course opens up a variety of opportunities through the broad range of skills it provides, and the qualification is widely recognised by universities and employers as proof of ability and competence when working with a range of application and communication software.

Portland Place School is currently running the ECDL training and testing program on a compulsory basis from year 9 to year 11, but it is also available to the sixth formers if they choose to follow it in their free time.

During these three years, students attend up to 60 tutored lessons for practice and testing at Portland Place School. However, as the students timetabled periods are not enough to cover extensive training sessions, it is the student’s responsibility to dedicate time to ECDL training at home.

To assist the students with their home-based training programme, we have enrolled our year 10 and year 11 students on a new web based training site that allows them to train themselves from home. Each student can log into this website (http://ecdl.enlightks.com/ks/myks2.dll/Home) and using their user name (Name.Surname) and password (ecdl) train themselves on the modules that are required for the ECDL certificate.

We give the students mock tests during the alternate Fridays as they come to the ECDL lessons and, if they gain a pass mark of 75%  or higher in the mock test, they are considered to be ready for the real test which can be given to them at the next session or during the club times. Students are strongly recommended to attend the after-school ECDL clubs which run on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room G11 from 4-5 PM in GPS building.

At present, students should aim to train and pass modules 1, 2 and 7 of the ECDL program to qualify for the ECDL Essential certification. Once they have passed this phase the next phase is to pass modules 3, 4, 5 and 6 which will lead them to the ECDL Extra certification.
